8.8 Still Puke'n

Hey Bill,

I took my Challenger to a local strip to try out the new slicks.  I was waved off the track after my first warm up.  I have installed the "bulb" vent tube.  One of the guys at the track asked what gear I am running.  I told him the 3.06.  He said that the gear was causing too much pressure in the differential.  Is that possible?  If that can happen, what about changing my gear to a 4.10 or there abouts?  If that is not it, how do we fix this problem?  Let me know.

Regards,

Johnnie

what type of a baffle is inside the differential to prevent the oil from getting soo high?

also, if it still persists. get a decent length of hose ( maybe around 36")  loop it around in a circle and zip tie the other end in a high area, maybe even put a filter on the end of the hose.

The 8.8 is as produced.  I have installed a 30" hose with a  bulb at the vent opening, it is a ford type vent tube.  It is as vertical as I could tie it above the wheel well.

No that is not true.  Have you tried enlarging the opening of the actual vent?  Some of the opening on the earlier model rear were a tad to small.   Ive also added a couple pukes tanks on some folks rears as they didn't want to do the fix right away.

The 8.8 was installed at Easy Street, and Bill has examined the differential at his shop, he also sent the vent tube that I described in an earlier reply

Not sure what it is, but I do know that it's not the gear ratio.

Is it possible to overfill an 8.8?

Make sure it's not overfilled. I had my 9" change 2 weeks ago and put 2 quarts in the guy was tring to tell me that it was isn't enought cause he could not touch the oil with his finger from the opening. He wanted to put more in but Chris says only 2 quarts. Probably if he put more in mine be puking as well.

Yes it can be over filled.... That will cause it to puke.   But Def not the gear ratio...

Rear ends shouldn't "puke" anything.  This is the type of little annoyances I wish were stated early on before some folks upgrade their junk only to have more head aches.  Is there not a way to solve it permanently without having a bottle to empty every X number of miles?

Didn't know it was a big secret. And it doesn't always happen for whatever reason.Sometimes one has to deal with little annoyances when building a race car.  BTW Turbo 400's like to puke a little fluid too. Moly drive shafts make noise, solid rear mounts make a little harsh ride, Loose converters can get annoying for day to day street driving, Superchargers like to puke belts once in a while, N20 solenoids get stuck for no reason.    There's more but im going to lunch

Sounds like the vent is too small. Not the hose but the hole drilled in the rear cover. Do you have a pic of the cover?

Typically if you put in 1.7 quarts of 85-140 it does not puke.

We manufacture at least 1.5 a week without puking.

Had a guy in Germany that his did the same thing when running 180 mph for extended times.

Changed his fluid and it never did it again.

Yes, the cover is well baffled.....the basic Ford baffle design was used.

BTW, the puke tank does not get emptied every x miles.

It is more like a radiator puke tank....it does not get emptied, but gets drawn back in.

Truly, some should NOT modify their vehicles.

I have not touched my Ram because I am not ready to put up with any annoyances.

Ok, that said, we may be sticking a single turbo on it this summer. (Test purposes of course:)

^^^ That's good to hear.  I accept a certain number of compromises to build strength in to my car, but I wouldn't consider putting a 8.8 or 9" in the rear of a car making it a "race" car.

my rear pukes ... pretty much on a daily basis.

Sometimes it's more solid than other times. Depends on what I've eaten lately.

Frankly, our 8.8's with the terrific Ford racing gears are quieter than most Getrags and 215's
