G3 Hemi Aussie A Body

The car - Chrysler had a manufacturing presence in Australia from 1964 till 1979, although cars were imported and converted to right steer as early as 1959 ..and mitsubishi inspired Chrysler product was assembled as late as 1981.
Most locally made stuff was based on the Abody platform...with US content varying from whole shells like the Dart...to simple floor pans like my car.
My car was a co- designed product with US designers - and was badged as the Chrysler Valiant Charger. Priginally it came out with the locally produced Hemi in-line 265cui 6 cylinder which made up to 305 BHP with triple webber carbs, and the std small block V8s... 318, 340 and 360.
Mine was built in Dec 1971 and was the luxury optioned 318 version with torqueflite transmission and floor selector.
Drivetrain - A couple of years back I broke the crank in my stroked 318 (392 cui)... And decided I needed a more streetable motor.
My engine builder buddy convinced me to look at installing a Gen 3...and the very next weekend I came across a crate 6.1 at Bob Mazzolini's for a killer price...so I took the bait.
Conversion- The G3 bolts straight up to the small block TF 727 using a specially made Mopar flex plate.
The big issue in our right steer cars is clearance on the right side, because of where our steering box and pedals are.
So I had to get the right side brake booster brackets and headers especially fabricated.
The rest was fairly easy using TTI adapters, a Champion radiator and a Jeep alternator because they proved a little more clearance than the car mounting point.
I chose to try an SRT MAX Plus cam on the car....but kinda wish Id done more research and gone with something a little bigger.
Choosing to run carb induction was personal choice...There's not a lot of difference in cost but I can tune a carb and it looks more " old school"
I use an MSD 6013 ignition box which was pretty much plug and play...but the supplied tune is a joke so I re- programmed the MAP and the curve.
That said...it hasn't all been plain sailing and atm Im dealing with a lean out caused by my 800 Eddy AVS simply not coping with the fuel demand of those huge HEMI ports.
So far my best (and only) runs have seen it go 109mph @ 12.6.... But given my 60ft was lame at 1.9 secs due to the lean out....its def got more in it.....especially as I run 3.9 gears, a 3800 stall and its only 3600lbs
So I plan to go dual quad next year which should lick the problem .,...but until then I may experiment with a Double Pumper at the track.

Holy shit that is cool. Those headers looks like they mean business. Nice work.

nice looking car, the motor and manifold/ carb options top it off nicely, great build thanks for sharing

I dig it. Good to see some more down under representation here. Long MOPAR and racing history.
The Gen 3 is a great motor and your approach allows avoiding much of the tuning heartburn we've enjoyed for what seems like dog years. It's getting better, though.
Good luck with the build.

Thanks HS.........True to say I haven't nailed the tune completely with this lean out issue when I stand on it - but at least I know how other guys fixed it....
I realise this is a Modern Mopar forum.....but for those that haven't seen one ..here's one of "our" Chargers in circuit road race trim..doing the typical lift of the inside front wheel.......

Cool ride. Of course I'd like to see EFI on it, but good stuff no matter how you feed it.

Sweet car. I've always liked them for some reason. As for the lean out, that 800 should be able to support your power levels. Have you tried the Edelbrock tuning kit? I have the same carb on my 68 Coronet with 383 solid lifter cam, ported heads and I run 12.2-12.5afr at wot. You may just need a jet change or to adjust the air door spring tension.

Thx for your interest - but Ive got the tuning kits and Ive got a lot of experience tuning AVS, TQs and AFBs...
The issue is not about the cfm rating ......This is a pump shooter issue....others who've done the same conversion have had the same problem.
Current thinking is that The head ports are so big on the G3 that the old school pump squirters just aren't big enough....even with the nozzles drilled out.
Mine improved a heap when I drilled it....but really it needs more fuel still.
Im trying a Holley double pumper on Sat...Ill let people know the results.

This was with a down and dirty tune...I'd probably run it leaner if the carb was staying on.
But the guts of it proved that it needed more fuel on a rapid secondary transition.

BAM...nice call.
Toss us a bone if you get a chance with some old school race circuit footage. I dig watching these old girls make a turn or two. Not much of that here ![]()

The "premier" road race I our country is called the Bathurst 1000 (Kilometers)...It used to be 500 miles...and endurance race that held a heap of prestige in what we called "Production car racing"....
Your SCCA / Trans Am would be the closest thing.....Homologation specials duking it out.
The thing about endurance races like your Daytona 24 hour...is the more fuel you can carry on board..the less stops...less time lost.
This footage shows what we called the "big tank" Charger being re-fuelled - basically two fuel tanks..the factory and another in the trunk...twin fillers ...and you have a Race option on the VIN tag worth $50K these days!
You'll laugh at the lack of protective clothing..and the hand re-fuelling....
