I have a 2010 Challenger R/T 5.7 L with 6 speed & 20" wheels. I've read that my gear ratio is 3.91 with the 20" wheels. If I changed the rear wheels to 22" what would my gear ratio be? Thanks for getting your poindexter on.

Your gear ratio is a constant. It doesn't change no matter what diameter wheels you have. What is the diameter of the 22" wheels compared to the diameter of the 20" wheels.....that will tell you what I think your trying to figure out

hmmmmm, i think its the diameter of the tires not the wheels. i could be wrong and usually am  but. by changing tire diameter you can effectually change the effective to the ground ratio. i think  .

Well first you need to understand how metric tire sizes work. Let's say you have a 255/25/22 tire. The middle number is the aspect ratio of the first number, the tread width. So in this case that tire would be 27" tall, with a sidewalk height of 2.5". But if you went to a 315/25/22 it would become a 28.20 tall tire with a sidewall of 3.1"

Before you can calculate anything further, you need to know what size tire you plan on running or know what final (effective) drive ratio you'd like to achieve.

Btw, aspect ratio is a percentage value.

There are plenty of online calculators for gear ratios for you to play with numbers. Just do a search for the gear ratios for the termec trans and go from there. If your trying to reduce your rpm for a given mph you can figure that out or even increasing your top speed.

Cam is right, Cruz is right. Basically if you have the same height tire with a 22" vs 20", nothing changes.

well let me try this,  if you start with 28 in diameter  tires and go to 29 inch tires the effective ratio was changed  from 3.91 to 3.77517241375.

ok i got the first post right  how about above^^^^^^^?

see alan if you stick around here long enough you learn enough to change your spark plugs. lol

Yahoo thanks MMF for the education..... :o :P

see i was once considering going from a 28 inch drag radial to a 27 inch dr and changing my effective ratio from the 3.06 to 3.17333333331.  but i seem to be crossing the traps in high rpm 3 gear, and it seems to work for me..

math 28 divided by 27 = 1.0370370 X 3.06  = 3.173333333331... not sure if there are enough 3's in that , but you get the point.

maybe someday i can try a smaller tire and hit the sweet spot. that would be 11.5000001.

oh i did all the decimals for speedy. B)

A worthless gen III history fun fact. Our very own hemi31 was the first guy to bolt on a rustang (cough, cough) 17" rim with a 25" tall drag radial and amaze all with 60fts unheard at the time. Ya see once in a far away Galaxy, we didn't have gears or even tuners for that matter. We relied on fooling the AIT sensor and the holy grail Jet Chip for all our performance needs.

It was a pathetic time lol

This doesn't address your axle ratio question, but it is a spreadsheet designed to show how different size & weight of wheels will affect your overall performance.  I can't take credit for creation of the spreadsheet.  Unfortunately I don't recall the original author, but it was shared on a forum in the past.
