......and reverse, also 2nd and 4th. Yes, it's a manual. The problem happened once back in July when I shut the car off, got out to go into a store, then got back in, started the car up and went to take it out of 1st and into reverse but couldn't get it out of 1st until I shut it off, and restarted it. And then it didn't happen for another few weeks. After the 2nd time, I took it to the dealership who said Chrysler wouldn't authorize pulling the transmission to lurk around and see what was amiss so home I went.

A couple weeks ago I stopped in a parking lot to back up into a spot and couldn't get it out of 2nd to reverse it. So back to the dealership and they still couldn't get the problem to happen and same response from Chrysler. A tech person needed to see it before they would authorize.

Finally, last week the dealership was replacing the vinyl strip along the inside passenger door edge and when I picked it up, it was backed into a parking spot with with the shifter in reverse. I started it and went to take it out of reverse and couldn't move it. I just couldn't pass up opportunity knocking so I called the dealership from my car and got someone from service to come out and witness this phenomenon first hand. It took 10 minutes of shutting it off and turning back on with brake on, emergency on, anything I could try before it finally worked. There was also a foul odour this time, and I've noticed it since as well. Now I am booked in at the dealership again, and they already called Chrysler so I will see what happens next day after tomorrow.

Here's the CT link where I first read about this. Figures I didn't have issues till after I read the thread.

Anybody heard of this problem with Challengers or other manuals?

I know shifting problems and a foul smell in the past has been too much grease on the input shaft. They usually have to pull the trans, clean off the excess grease and reassemble. There is a star case number for this I will try to find it.

Found it, tell the tech to look this up.

Have the techs check the Star Center case # K38556860, which is to remove the trans and clean the input shaft/clutch plates mating surfaces and replace the lubricant/grease. This has been a problem with the 6 speeds, give them this info and tell them to fix your car. Phil

Good luck with this Val. You can think of this as a possible opportunityto upgrade to a Spec Clutch while the trans is out.

Let us know what happens.

Val, hopefully everything holds together at the track today. I might eschew running down the strip until that's attended to, but I'm kinda conservative that way - ask HemiSam.

LMAO, Jim. At least you're a consistent broken record...

I'd say what Phil mentioned and I'd definitely have them inspect the clutch. You don't need anything aftermarket but have them take a good look at it and I'd argue you had to play with that peddle hard in the past while trying to get the tranny to work.

Best of luck, Val.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Tomorrow's the big day.

I'll give them the star center case. Hopefully, it's accessible by Canada.

Yeah when ever you give them those numbers they get weird. It is like they find out not everyone is stupid and it scares them. :)

per Chrysler

Step 1: flush tranny and drain fluid through coffee filter to check check for foreign debris, at my expense of course since I'm almost at that stage mileage-wise.
Tranny fluid clean.

Step 2: Reinstall stock shifter.

Forgot you had a Hurst shifter. Unless there was something grossly out of whack with it, it shouldn't cause the car to be stuck in gear. However, the dealer will logically blame it on non-Chrysler products (even though the Hurst Editions came with the same shifter)>

Well, put the factory shifter on and see if it does it again. If it does, then take it back and bitch. I really doubt it is the Hurst - doesn't make sense that the car would shift absolutely normally and suddenly lock up so the car can't be shifted into neutral.

Getting that done Thursday. I can't even attempt to do it myself since it'll take me hours compared to someone more experienced/mechanically inclined and I can't afford to wait until I have a whole day to work on it since it's getting worse all the time. And not having the knowledge of how the transmission/clutch/shifter work together, I'm pretty much at Chrysler's mercy. :)

It's hard not to lose my temper at my dealership when I can see how frustrated they are at having their hands tied.

Thought the shifter was an easy, DIY type thing? That sounds like a lot of expense, and a dumb requirement. I would bet it isn't the shifter.

I would bet bet it isn't either.

DIY? :D lol My CAI suggested install time was 30 minutes. It took me over an hour, with experienced overseers. Speedy's video suggests 1.5 hrs. Add my inexperience & doing it solo and it'd probably be a great episode for Canada's worst something or other :) but nothing much happening carwise between now and spring so I can set aside a whole weekend (no pressure, less mistakes) once the problem is fixed.

They said nothing showed up but also 1 or 2 cases on a forum doesn't make it a blanket solution for all gear sticking problems.

Star case numbers are a site for chrtsler techs to go to. I would say they never looked it up, chrysler does not put out a case number for 1 or 2 cases. Typical chrysler techs, I would talk to the service manager and make him look it up before you spent the money on the oil change.

I think she already spent the money on a tranny oil change. I'll have to check my owners manual - but I think it's a recommended service for "rough service' usage six speeds. With all the mileage she puts on her R/T, not the worst service that could be done.

I think what's the real rip-off - making her pay to swap back in the OEM shifter for the Hurst - hello? Hasn't her dealer ever heard of the Hurst Edition Challenger? Those were sold THRU dealers I think.

Not sure with the Hurst - but could a bushing be messed up that would cause it to intermittently bind? I am guessing that would be EXCEEDINGLY improbable.

I tend to agree here. If the dealer questioned the Hurst, I'd tell them they're welcome to swap them back and forth. Shouldn't take an experienced tech with a lift more than 30 mins. Time to push back a bit Val. The shifter should have nothing to do with the problem. It's just a linkage to the actual transmission and is nothing more than two arms on a big ball joint.

Yep, already got the tranny oily change. The manual says manual transmission flush recommended at 60k kms. I'm at 68k now. Manual also says spark plugs at 50k kms. Guess I better get onto that.
