Thanks again for this, it took me maybe 30 mintues to switch out my fuel pump with a new 392 fuel pump. Between this thread and Speedys video I had no issues what so ever.

You used a stock 392 pump instead of the API Competition pump?

I need to drain my tank in the next few days and can't find the adapter locally.

How forceful does fuel shoot out of the fuel rail hose connector?

If I put the car on a lift, disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail, and simply set that connector inside a large hose (say 1" ID), with the other end in a gas can underneath the car; would fuel spray back up the large hose?  Or would it work well and simply flow down the hose?

It doesn't shoot out forcefully at all. Water comes out your faucet at 40-60 psi. Same pressure for the fuel being pumped out. Your plan will work.

Where's Dalton and his handy dandy drain tool?  I still need one!

The number of times I've been doing this, I seriously considered just installing a valve into my fuel line where I can turn the spigot and drain it. But then, fuel prices being what they are, someone could come along and steal all my gas, so I decided against it. lol

If you can find the 3/8 male end of the quick disconnect, you are good to go. I'll get a pic tomorrow.

Yeah, when I went to order the API, luke didn't have them and didn't know when they would be in so I ordered a 392 fuel pump.  They got the API pumps in right after I ordered mine and I was about to cancel my order when it showed up on my porch.  So I keep the 392 pump, didn't realize how quick I'd be pro charging my car or I would of sent it back.  I'm not worried though, with a boost-a-pump I should be just fine with the SC only at 6psi.

Thanks Everyone,

I put the fuel rail connector in a piece of 1" ID, 1.25" OD clear hose from Lowes, ran the hose down the side of the motor, and into a gas can.  I had the car up a few feet on the lift.  It worked like a charm.

I ran the pump until fuel stopped flowing.  I decided to turn the car on to check the fuel gauge and it moved from 3/4 full to between 1/4 - 1/3 full.  I wondered if there were baffled sections in the tank that take a minute to drain so I turned the car off and on a few times and waited a few minutes.  It stayed at 1/4 - 1/3.  I don't know why.

I connected the hose back to the fuel rail and re-installed the relay.  The fuel pump wouldn't turn off (not building any pressure because it's empty) and the car would not fire.  So why was the gauge reading that it had fuel?  I put 5 gallons of fresh gas in the tank and she fired right up.  But, now the gauge reads just over 1/2 a tank (with only 5 gallons in it).

Do I have to reset the fuel gauge somehow?

Don't worry about the gauge. It takes info from 2 sensors, one on each side. The fuel tank is a saddle shape, to accommodate the drive shaft. Computer looks at the level of both sensors and calculates your remaining fuel based on the average of the two. But it takes several minutes of driving for it to do this. When you put 5 gallons in, that only filled up the drivers side, not the passengers side. So the sensors were sending inconsistent data to the computer, until you drive around a bit to equalize the levels in both sides.

The levels equalize by the Venturi system in the auxiliary fuel pump on the passenger's side. It takes fuel from the main pump on the driver's side and sends it to the rails. Any fuel in excess of 61 psi gets fed back over to the driver's side fuel hat to be used again. So the time it takes to equalize the fuel level in both sides is in direct proportion to how much pressure in excess of 61 psi your pump is generating.

All that is assuming you didn't pull your fuel pumps out and actually damage the sensors.

Drive around a bit and you'll know.
