While poking around a Mopar parts site I noticed that for around $1,000 you can buy a set of 392 heads complete with valves and springs. I don't really know the specs on the 392 heads but would assume they are a good bit better than the ones on the 5.7.

Has anyone out there swapped a set onto their 5.7 or have any input/opinion as to whether this might make a good bolt on, or would it most likely just be a waste of time and money if the 5.7 is still mostly stock.

If you can still buy 392 heads for $1,000 (WITHOUT a core charge) buy every freaking one of them!

Assuming you are talking about your Challenger 5.7 (Eagle). The heads that come on that car will support a tremendous amount of power (especially if you have them ported). There are several strokers out there running ported Eagle heads. GTP did one hell of a job on my Eagle heads.

I understand it's a valve clearance issue. They need some more meat on them, especially if you spin the engine hard.

I've got no complaints with mine either, Jon. Arrington built mine.

They will clear a stock block, but its extremely tight. You really need to notch the block for the intake valve. In addition to that, the intake valve sits very close to the top of the piston and you will need to measure/verify piston to valve clearance. One final thing, they are actually about $1300 a set now.

6.4 heads 449.90 EACH PLUS A 150.00 CORE
09+ 5.7 heads LEFT HEAD 419.10 CORE 150.00 RIGHT HEAD 225.50 + 150.00 CORE

That price difference between left and right is downright funny.
I've never understood that... happens all the time with dealer parts (other manufacturers too).

I just looked them up again to make sure and they list them for 449.90 each as you say, they don't say anything about a core charge that I can see, but of course that doesn't mean that there isn't one or that they would even have any in stock.

I kind of figured there would probably be more to this than just bolting a set on, otherwise I would have thought I would have read about guys doing it by now. Oh well I was hoping for a relatively easy bolt on with minimal (hopefully none) machine work.

Yeah I thought about that too, and notching the block isn't necessarily a big deal other than I don't want to get into that much work at the moment. Mostly I was just curious, as a head upgrade generally seems like a natural thing to do for most motors and I haven't really read much about the 5.7 guys upgrading their heads. It may be as Nova said that the Eagle heads are good enough (especially when ported) to take care of most peoples needs.

We have done a ton of Eagle heads. A Mean Street Eagle head will walk all over a Stock Apache head on a 5.7L engine.

Out of curiosity does anyone know the valve size of the 392 heads? I'm guessing they are bigger than the 2.08 and 1.60 valves on the 6.1 heads.
