With all the excitement of Challengerfest 4, I forgot to post the story of how the Yellow Jacket got a supercharger. I’ll keep it as brief as I can.
Almost exactly 8 weeks ago, I get this cryptic text from Alan that says, “Call me when you get a chance.” Little did I know what I was in for. Even with the tuning being unlocked about a month before, the forced induction tables for the 392’s were still being worked out. Procharger had an inside line on it, and wanted to be first to market with a kit and canned tune. They needed a car with a 2011+ PCM to beta test. Exact same Procharger as Alan’s, but now they could tune it.
I had to get my car to them within a week, and I told them I wanted the car back by Challengerfest. They couldn’t guarantee it, but what the heck, I figured that their sense of urgency to get this thing out on the market would help me get my car back on time. So with about 6 weeks to go before CF4, I sent my car to Kansas City.
There were some delays, as there always are. They Procharger was installed without any issues, thanks to their experience with Alan’s car. The tune was a different story. They were pretty tight-lipped about the details, but in the end they were happy that it wasn’t going to blow up my engine. They were having some problems placing the power steering fluid reservoir, and didn’t want to give me back the car until they worked it out. But they also knew I REALLY wanted my car back for CF4, so they released it to me with an off-the-shelf PS reservoir, and when their custom unit was ready they would ship it to me to install myself. They had another 6-speed car there that they were continuing to use for fit tests.
The car dynoed at 570 rwhp on 7 lbs of boost, as in this video:
I got the car back with 2 weeks to go before CF4, and still had to install the line lock and Gforce axles. I worked my ass off, and thanks to everyone on here who helped out with advice and encouragement, got it done.
Some of you who were paying attention remember that the car did not have 570 rwhp at CF4. It turns out that Procharger was swapping pulleys around during the testing, and my car accidentally left the factory with a 5 lb instead of 7 lb pulley. It dynoed at 515 rwhp, which is respectable, but not all that it is capable of.
I can't say enough how grateful I am to Alan for thinking of me when Procharger contacted him about getting a test car. I owe him big-time for hooking me up.
The 7 lb pulley, and power steering fluid reservoir will get to me soon. Once I get the new pulley, I’m taking it back to the track with Speedy, Phil, Greg, and whoever else can make it so we can log some data and see what’s next. J calls it the “mad scientist” part of racing, which I actually find to be the most fun and rewarding aspect. Going fast is nice, but the tinkering and tweaking you do to get there is really what drew me into this hobby.
So the story is far from over...
