I don't run MOPAR filters.  WIX, Royal Purple for the 5-pt head on the filter and a few others over the years.

I generally use the Mobil1 filter. I figure they all came off the same line at this point.

Never heard a lifter get louder when warm but I suppose it's possible. You did put the stethescope on the pan and block as well?

Run a can of Seafoam through it for 500 miles, then add Shell Rotella 15W50. If no change, pull the cover and inspect springs. All good? Pull heads and lifters.

When you scoped it, were you able to identify the side and cylinder?

I thought it strange as well and why I originally thought it was an exhaust leak that was opening up when warm.  When the motor is cold there is no tick at all but there is a very loud one when it's hot.  I put the scope on the oil pan and sides of the block and the sound is barely audible.  When I put it on the passenger side head between cyl 4 and 6 I can hear a very clear metal ping sound.

I've been busy Christmas shopping my last two days of vacation and haven't had time to check the car out yet.  I'm gonna try to do it today after the gym and more Christmas shopping if I can squeeze it in.  The car runs great and no CEL or anything but I don't wanna take any chances of dropping a valve or something.

Dudes....ya gotta check out the Amsoil Filter.... PWR approved!!!

AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters (EaO, Ea15K)
Ea Oil Filters rank among the most efficient filters available for the auto/light-truck market. When used in conjunction with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils, AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters are guaranteed for extended service life:

Find the Filter That Fits Your Vehicle

Master Filter Cross-Reference Guide

Absolute Efficiency
Efficiency is the filter's ability to capture contaminants. The more efficient a filter is, the more contaminants it will remove from the oil. AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters have one of the best efficiency ratings in the automotive/light-truck market. Ea Oil Filters provide a filtering efficiency in accordance with industry standard ISO 4548-12 of 98.7 percent at 20 microns, while competitive filters demonstrate efficiencies as low as 51 percent (see graph).

Less Restriction
Proper oil flow is essential to keeping engine parts lubricated at all times. AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters' synthetic fibers are smaller than the fibers used in traditional filters, allowing Ea Oil Filters to provide lower restriction. During cold-temperature warm-up periods, an Ea Oil Filter allows the oil to flow through the filter more easily than a typical cellulose filter does. Lower restriction decreases engine wear.

Contaminant Retention
A filter's capacity refers to the amount of contaminants it can hold and still remain effective. AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters have a greater capacity for small, wear-causing contaminants than competing filter lines. In fact, when used in conjunction with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils, AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters are guaranteed for up to 15,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first, or 25,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first, depending on application and severity of service. They provide convenience and cost savings through extended service intervals.

Superior Construction
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters are made with premium-grade full-synthetic media. The strictly controlled processing of this media ensures accurate filter construction and is what allows Ea Oil Filters to deliver higher capacity and efficiency along with better durability.

Over the service life of a conventional cellulose filter, hot oil will degrade the resins that bind the media. Ea Oil Filters' full-synthetic media technology is resin-free. It uses a wire screen backing that is pleated with the media for superior strength.

Ea Oil Filters are constructed with HNBR gaskets that are fully tested to extreme distances in numerous severe environments. The filters also feature fully tucked seams, a molded element seal, roll-formed threads and a long-lasting, premium-grade silicone anti-drain valve. Ea Oil Filters (except EAO80 and EAO99) feature fluted cans for improved grip.

Applications And Recommendations
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters provide superior oil filtration for cars and light trucks.

Service Life
When used in conjunction with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils, AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters are guaranteed for extended service life:

• Ea Filters designated with product code Ea15K are recommended for 15,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first, in normal or severe service.

• Ea Filters designated with product code EaO are recommended for 25,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first, in normal service or 15,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first, in severe service.

Consult the AMSOIL Online Application Guide or MyAMSOILGarage™ at www.amsoil.com to determine the appropriate filter for each application. When AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters are used with a motor oil other than an AMSOIL extended drain motor oil the filter should be changed according to the vehicle manufacturer recommendation.

15,000 miles or up to 25,000 miles, depending on application,
when used with AMSOIL synthetic motor oil.

Jay.... Have a bud plug both tails with some old rags when the engine is idling. Listen to the manifolds....if there is a leak...you will hear it while the tailpipes are plugged.

That's a good idea SteveO.  I didn't get time to look at it today so it's on the agenda for this week.

You guys are fucking stupid if you think the oil filter has anything to do with the tapping. Are you guys really that dumb?

I would guess exhaust leak also but could be a valve seat coming lose or a spring.

IT"S NOT THE OIL FILTER YOU RETARDS!

I don't dismiss any suggestions when troubleshooting but the oil filter discussion did make me chuckle a bit

I didn't get time to mess with it today.  The weather has been crummy here with ice/sleet so the 4Runner has been the vehicle of choice.  I did put a Speedy's Garage decal on my new portable air tank for the track though lol

It still could be an exhaust leak, but the stethoscope says otherwise.  There is a very clear "ping" of metal contact when placed between cylinder 4 and 6.  If it's a lifter I hope some engine cleansing fixes it.  I'm not really up for pulling the head again UGH.

I doubt it's a lifter. I would think its a seat if not the spring. Ask Eric what he thinks.
Making more noise hot, it may be loosening up from the heat. I wouldn't drive it or run it till you pull the heads.

One other thing to consider is possibly a clogged push rod.  It doesn't take much, Maybe while you have the valve cover off give that a look.

Yep had a coupon that made it practically free lol  I gotta decal for ya if you want one.

If I have to pull the rocker to check the rods I'll spray some cleaner down through the push rods to get to the lifter port as well.  I'm gonna do everythign I can to keep from pulling the heads again.  Talk about fluid management lol

I'd bet good money you'll have to pull the head, bud.  Best of luck with it being a small thing.
