^^^ X3, 100% SPOT ON !
The entire weekend was a blast ( well almost if it hadn't been for the Trinity issue's) but I laughed more than I have in a long time! GSO made me blow Dr Pepper back up my nose twice with his race track commentary. Ohh my gawd that was some hilarious stuff right there and I have it on video.
I had never been one to pay much attention to land speed or mile racing before, always into drag racing, but Sam talked me into coming out to the Tx Mile in Oct 2011 just to observe and I have been hooked ever since! Soooo....It's my story and I'm sticking to it, It's still all Sam's fault!
LMAO....here we go again ![]()
Glad you were finally able to get the logger working on the Trinity, Kenny. I'm confident you were seeing false knock. Everything else looked really clean and the car was consistent. No LT KR.
You'll tear those speed up with the new motor next time.

Well, after spending Sunday night with friends in San Antonio and leaving for home Monday morning I am finally home. It was a 3000 mile round trip and I hit every state of the Confederacy, except for Florida, but I don't think that they even took Florida seriously.
I hadn't had the car on the track in race tune since last May, and I made the mistake of going with the dyno setting for the boost controller instead of going with the setting that I had run at VMP last spring. The dyno can't load the turbos, so they had to set 27 lbs of boost on the controller to get be able to get the motor to 18 lbs. At the track the controller is set at 18-20 lbs and it will give me 18 lbs. But I had forgotten that and set it at 27 lbs of boost.
So on my first pass every time I hit 100% throttle and the boost kicked in I was spinning and kicking the car sideways, At about the 1/4 it is controllable and I look at the boost gauge, it shows 27 lbs, so I get off it and coast to the first return road. The emergency vehicles had started down the track because from the starting line it had looked like I was fishtailing because of oil and they wanted to make sure that I hadn't put anything down on the track. So that pass was a wash, and where I had probably done the damage. The motor held together at 27 lbs of boost, but the #8 cylinder was the last to get fuel (front crossover only) and it most likely went lean on that pass.
My second run I dialed in a moderate 12 lbs of boost, was supposed to run a qualifying run between 145-165 mph, but got distracted looking at all the damn gauges and ran 186. But I screwed up and turned off on a return road and didn't go by the RV to get the slip. When I went back to get it they said that if I didn't get it right after the pass, then the pass didn't count. Which actually worked out for me because they probably would have booted me for exceeding the 165 limit of my Class C license.
On Saturday I settled down, was only running on the wastgates (6lbs of boost), and watched the speedometer. It accelerated rather sluggish so I looked at the boost and A/F gauges and noticed it wasn't registering any boost. I manages a 149 pass N/A and when I let out is started missing and stumbling. So I got my Class B license pass, but it was definitely hurt with no boost and a miss.
Pulled it back to the pits and we attempt an exorcism. Couldn't find any vacuum leaks or anything loose on the boost control system. Spanking Time had an extra set of plugs so went to change them to see if that would help with the miss. When we pulled the old ones we found that the ones for #8 were toast. No electrode or porcelain was left on them and they were oily. We tried another set in and no improvement. Tomorrow I am going to get a scope to look inside, but it probably isn't going to be pretty.
What killed the motor was me setting the boost controller based on the dyno runs, and the fuel set-up. The tune was good, otherwise I would have toasted more plugs. It was only in the last cylinder to get fuel that we had an issue. Consensus at the track was that if the fuel system would of had a rear crossover in addition to the front crossover then it would have received enough fuel and would have lived.
I will be back in March, with a better fuel system and a Class B license. I had a blast meeting up with everyone, those consecutive tenth better passes by Gossamer were priceless. Thanks for all the help trying to diagnose the issues with the motor. Next time I will be smarter with boost controller and making passes, guess that I had to pay my dues on this trip.

I like the rest wish you could have completed your runs. But, it wasn't in the cards. But, I bet next March you will make the 200 mph club.
One last thing be sure to check that #8 plug harness that I put back together.

I hope Phil and Sean read this several times Front and rear crossovers are cheap insurance even at low boost settings. Good write up Ed, racing at those levels is certainly a challenge. I plan to be there in March and look forward to meeting you and checking out the hot rod.

I don't know if it's necessary, but at Ed's level it seems simple enough. I was a bit surprised he didn't have a return system. Not sure if any of it would have mattered, but it was the cylinder at the end of the rail.

I was gonna mind my own business, but they had to poke the bear. Ya can't make this stuff up....
PRLog (Press Release) - Oct. 15, 2013 - IRVINE, Calif. -- Adam Montague, owner of Spankin Time Performance in San Bernardino, Calif., along with Jesse Iwuji, an active duty United States Naval Officer, broke the 200 MPH barrier at the Mojave Mile competition held on October 12-13, 2013 in their respective Dodge Challengers.
Montague and Iwuji are two members of Team Spankin Time, an amateur muscle car club based in Southern California, whose members boast 700+ RWHP cars. The duo, along with Joel Highsmith, and his vehicle the “Grizz” will be competing in the upcoming Texas Mile competition, being held on October 26-27, 2013.
The trio all own Dodge Challenger’s, the leader of the Dodge performance lineup.
The Dodge Challenger came from the factory with a then-rated 425 HP at the crank, based on the 6.1L SRT8 package.
Montague, Iwuji, and Highsmith’s vehicles are well in excess of 1,000 HP at the crank with additional room to grow.
All vehicles are daily driven on the street, run on E85 alternative fuel and are fully compliant with all NHRA safety standards.
Green1™ is one of the official sponsors of the club, and is offering a conditional sponsorship to the team beginning in January 2014.
“This is an exciting time for us at Green1,” said Mr. Ajit Narasimhan, Sr. Vice-President of Green1. “To have not one, but two cars break the 200-mile-per-hour mark is a remarkable feat and a testament to the quality and expertise of Spankin Time Performance.”
The three members will be running their respective vehicles in the Texas Mile – a national event which showcases some of the fastest vehicles in the country.
Breaking 200 MPH with a 4,500 + pound vehicle is not an easy task. Compensating for weight with an ungodly amount of horsepower and proper gearing, as well as removing the factory top speed governor are but a few of the steps required to make it to the mark.
Currently, the Modern Mopar record for the standing mile is 204 MPH. Montague and Iwuji don’t just plan on besting the record in the upcoming Texas Mile – they want to destroy the record.
And then this gem on the LX...

Just wanted to let everyone know that Joel Highsmith ran a personal best in Texas last weekend. He went 202.3 ,not only making his run the fastest Twin Screw single power adder run, but we also had the fastest late model Hemi at the event. Although there were no new records set, we felt the run was pretty good considering the weather conditions and the fact we had 3.27 gears in the rear. The 202.3 was coasting through the finish. We are still working on the combos, so when we hit next event , we will run even better. Not sure we will make Texas, but we will be at Mojave, with 4 Challengers, 2 Chargers and a 300c. All will break the 200 barrier .
Big CONGRATS to Joel and Jesse from TST for breaking the 200MPH barrier in true street cars.
No mention of the tail wind being the only thing that took them from the 196mph they were running all day to the 202mph run due to the front that passed through. "Coasting"...LMAO. I guess they didn't "destroy it" after all. I wouldn't have mentioned the torn up engine in the superbird or the transmission in his car that had to be replaced with the one from the superbird either.
And that record is 205.7mph set by a big ol' fat stick car without a tail wind, skippy. WINNING...

I don't know about that tail wind, Sam. Wind was pretty light and seemed to be moving around and different every few minutes late in the day and it got crazy hot for awhile, but cooled down slightly late. I think what got Joel over the top in Adams car was that he actually seemed to know how to drive. The last run I saw Adam make was one of the worst sounding runs I heard all weekend. I am pretty sure I have a video of it. Adam came out and absolutely roasted tires on every pass I saw him make. Can't speak for the 196 as I was at the end with you guys.

I had Monica and Kenny texting me, Chuck. They indicated the wind had turned...I'm assuming watching the flags, and we could see the front coming in on radar as it had blown through Houston. Going from say a 3mph cross wind to a 2-3mph tail wind is huge. Also, the launch isn't nearly as big a factor as the half mile and the only difference between Adam and Joel was 1mph yet the top end picked up 6mph. Sorry, bud. Kinda know this stuff.
