All Compcam 274's Please!!

38 posts in this topic

I'd like to know the following:

  • RT or 392?
  • Horsepower Gain
  • Drivability (Any surging, problems with idling)
  • Video of Idling
  • Who installed the cam?
  • Who tuned it?

Any other comments? Would you do the 274 CompCam again/are you satisfied with the gains?

I'll go first...

RT or 392? RT 5.7L

Horsepower Gain - 45rwhp gain on the cam

Drivability (Any surging, problems with idling)
it likes to stall sometimes when switching from Park to Drive or Reverse or Reverse to Drive/Drive to reverse. I will switch it from Park to drive and the rpms will come down to about 500 and then rev back up to 1000 sometimes or just turn off. In the case that it turns off OR the car has already been running and I turn it back on after 10 mins or so, it sometimes has starting issues. The starter will keep going with it either starting or not starting. For me to get it started, I give it some gas when it has that issue.

Who installed the cam?
Mechanic/friend in GA

Who tuned it?
A shop tried with no luck whatsoever, gave me a tune to get me back home.

Johan (via e-mail) was the one who did the tuning 30+ revisions and still has the above issues.

Any other comments? Would you do the 274 CompCam again/are you satisfied with the gains?
I originally got this came because of the gains I saw on a thread on this website. My initial goal was to get the lope sound which is near to impossible to get on these VVT engines. For the money vs the gains, I think you can get a better bang for buck with the 392 cam but not the lope like the 274.

Would I do it again? If I knew the pain on tuning this cam, probably not.

There was a lot of surging but I think that's just getting the tune fixed which it does not surge AS MUCH anymore.

Lately, the car while driving will hold the gear in automatic until I hit like 3500-4k rpms. That's kind of high. Last time, I just re-tuned it and it fixed it but it's happening again now. OR another fix is to manually shift. Kind of feels like my transmission is going out but i'm not really sure i know what that feels like. Also, after coming to a stop with the issue described here, the rpms will come down to 700 and surge until it "finds" the proper rpms.

I almost bought this cam on Amazon for $600. Andy advised me not to. He said that it is too big for the 5.7 hemi. I went with a custom grind PWR cam. Should know today or tomorrow on the gains. OST will be doing the tuning. See my thread in OST.

Was this before or after you put the Vortech on?

I had the cam on for about 8 months before the Vortech. The issues described about park to drive and drive to reverse is before and after the vortech.

The issue described about not shifting gear in automatic until 3.5-4krpms is after the vortech. Not sure if the supercharger has anything to do with it. Maybe the underdrive pulley is slowing the rpms down way too much?

Yes, I wish I had done a little more research before going for it.

The cam is too big its a PITA to tune Even in a larger motor.. But def too big for a 5.7 I have seen the same gains you described in custom grinds that were much easier to tune. BUT like you said no Lope to speak of Not like the non VVT stuff unfortunately. As mentioned feel free to try a different tuner but Ive seen the best of the best have a hard time with that thing. One would be surprised how often ALL the tuners get with one another to learn new shit from each other... Best of luck.

On a side note shoot Johan another email ask him if what he recently figured out on this comp 270 for me will work on yours Wirth a shot as this just went down a couple days ago....

Thanks I will ask him!

Daniel I have the cam in my engine and it runs great. AJ tuned it and it ran a 12.2 at CF5

5.7L with the cam only a 12.2 or?? No issues at all? Have a video? Thanks!

The 274 isnt necessarily too big, but it is definitely a tuning challenger from what I have seen. I think this custom grind we did for Stevo will provide close to same gain with much better drivability till the tuning catches up

Like Andy said i don`t think it`s to big, just need the right tuner with some experience with that cam as it is a PITA if a tuner has little or no experience with the cam. I can say i have seen Josh tune these cams and get a tremendous amount of HP out of them and they were streetable. I usually see around a 80 HP gain alone with this cam on a 5.7. The 6.4`s usually see around 50 with cam alone. Give Josh a call as i am sure he can tune your combo via email with some good data logs

Daniel my car is a 5.7 based 392 forged stroker with 274 comp cam and phase limiter, stage 6 heads. I remember that I was told that when they first put it on the dyno it was shutting off and hard to start. So Matt and AJ installed bigger injectors and tuned away. I would talk to one of the tuners here. It's hard enough tuning these in person so email tuning is going to be a pita. Nothing beats hands on tuning. Good luck and keep us updated.

I'll need to get with another tuner then and see what they can do. I'm in Houston, TX and will most likely not be shipping my car. I wonder if remote tuning would be possible...

What size injectors are you running currently?

80# injectors

Sorry, wrong info....This is what Johan told me he saw:

They are #63 at 43.5 fuel pressure, and your pressure is 58 which makes them rated higher

I just want my car to stay on when switching from park to drive, drive to reverse, reverse to drive and have 0 drivability issues! I don't like hearing clanking in the motor when the rpms get low and car is trying to stay on.

You don't need 80lb injectors for that level of boost. They won't hurt if your tuner knows what they're doing, but it's overkill for what you're pushing through the manifold.
