Ost Jeep Gets A Hrh Performance Shortblock

This was terrible timing trying to squeeze an engine, trans and converter swap in a week before CF6 but I couldn't resist seeing how this new HRH shortblock will perform in the Jeep. The hard part is that there was nothing wrong with the old 5.7 based engine, but out she came. If all the stars align we hope to make some 1/8th mile passes at CF6. Right now there's Jeep parts all over the shop and no engine or trans in the old buggy.

Out with the old:

The new HRH shortblock:

Got to get busy!

What was the driving factor to swap shortblocks?

Realistically I was already making enough power with the old engine. However, seeing the performance gains with two other HRH Performance short blocks I just had to give one a try.

Who's HRH?

There will be a HRH Performance "landing page" up shortly. Here's a FB link: https://www.facebook.com/HRHPerformance?ref=hl

Micah is a MACHINE! What a blessing to have him helping with this operation!

Heads, timing cover, accessories and intake are already back on and almost ready to install.

Getting closer!

Mike that's so flipping cool having your boy working with you like that. I dig the days when it's just me n my kid doing the same crap here. Good luck with your new set up.

Yes, it is and to be honest I would never have even attempted this swap on short notice without him. I am very thankful he enjoys this as much as or maybe even more than me.

Nice can't wait to see what this setup can do. Hopefully see ya at cf6

I don't think I will run it past the 1/8th until I get everything tested and dialed in. Too many untested changes to make a full on pass - unless everything works well.

The good news is she fired right up this afternoon and sounds sweet. Put it on the dyno and did some break in driving to get the rings seated properly. Hopefully I can make some low boost hits on Monday and if all goes well crank it up.

Good news. Hope it's a good time. What is your procedure to seat the rings?

My procedure may be a bit unorthodox but it's what I have done for a very long time without issue so I'll stick with it :)

Here it is in a nutshell:

1. For initial break in oil I use Rotella T - straight 30 or 10w30

2. Always have someone with you when you fire the engine for the first time to inspect for leaks (this time for some reason several of the fuel line fittings for the Jeep started spewing fuel and had to be replaced and it was a good thing we caught it because it was at the back of the fuel rail and hard to see).

3. Once the engine fires verify oil pressure and fueling. Too much fuel and the rings won't seat.

4. Once the engine reaches operating temp I drive it relatively hard. In my case the vehicle is always on the dyno and I run it through the gears, changing throttle position but being fairly aggressive with both up shifts and down shifts. I may not go completely WOT but I will go 3/4 throttle frequently.

5. I do this for approximately 10 minutes, carefully watching the engine temp and oil pressure. If either of these are out of line stop immediately.

6. I don't know if this step is necessary but I let the engine cool completely.

7. Next time I start the car I bring it to operating temp, let it heat soak for 15-20 minutes then hammer it and do the WOT tuning.

8. Change the oil.

I'm sure others will disagree with this method and I am open to other suggestions. Many of my customers that race skip step 6 and go right to WOT tuning or WOT track passes.

Some quick updates:

1. As usual CF6 was a blast! Thanks Speedy, all the organizers and sponsors!

2. We only got to make a few passes in the Jeep and all but the last it was making way too much boost to stay in it.

3. We had intermittent problems with the turbo oiling periodically causing the Jeep to smoke like crazy at idle. It happened once on Friday on the way home from the carwash then stopped. It happened again in the staging lanes after my last pass and only at idle.

4. We're not sure if it's the drain getting clogged, the turbo seals or?

5. The HRH Performance engine repeatedly took 30+psi hits (I can only read boost to 30psi) and stayed together! Scary....

30 psi! :o

Glad you guys brought the Jeep out. I heard a lot of folks commenting on it while I was walking around the track. The display you guys had setup was very cool as well. I'm still adding up the totals, but I think we had about 400 or so spectators show up on Saturday. That's some good exposure to vendors with displays.

Good seeing you guys again and tell Mikah it was nice meeting his lovely wife. She seemed to get right in there and enjoy herself as well.

Keep us posted on this monster!

If we only had one more day prior to the event.... This is the best event of the year in this part of the country hands down and shouldn't be missed. Micah's wife Amy is fantastic! That was her first car event and she was helping any way she could. Micah scored big time there :)

Can't wait to see what this monster does! Is that a SHR transfer case?

I can't either but need to be really careful until we get a bar in it. Yes, it is a SHR refreshed transfer case and trans.

We are also testing a new ProTorque converter that obviously doesn't flash as high as the old one which caused me to push the the light on the 2 step the first time I tried it (in the video). However, the impact of the new converter on low end boost was impressive. I'll need to hit it with some spray off the line after we get things sorted out and see if I can get it back in the 1.4x 60'.

30psi?? lol! That's crazy! Damned fine new motor to hold together with that!

Actually that's all the higher the boost gauge reads. Who knows where it really went.

Mike, what were you using for fuel to get the orange/red smoke fogger effect?

That was a special "top secret" fuel additive :)

In all seriousness, that was the first time the Jeep has moved since last year. Lots of mild steel piping and water sitting in it for several months tends to make a lot of rust.

Note to self: If running E85 be sure to run some pump gas and "clean out" the pipes before storing for winter - also stop using mild steel.
