Cam Instal, What Else Needed?

Hey all. I have a '13 Challenger 392, 6 speed. In January to February I plan on having some mild engine work done. I'd like some guidance and suggestions so I don't head down to the shop blind. The car isn't a DD, but I do drive the hell out of it when weather permits.

My mods thus far are basic. They consist of a Legmaker true, (fender pull), ported throttle body and intake manifold by Peakspeed, 180Tstat, email 93 tune by Hemifever, and Magnaflow competition series cat back. I never intend to do any type of power adders, so keep that in mind.

What I'm doing next month is a cam upgrade, American Racing Headers long tubes with high flow cats, and an under drive pulley.

Some input that I'm looking for would be things like cam specs, (lift, duration, lsa), how much % under drive pulley, valve springs and hardware, spark plugs, (OEM okay?), better timing chain, and anything else I might want to consider.

I'm about 90% certain that I'm not touching the heads. All my research has shown me that the Apache heads in stock form perform very well. Unless someone can show me that I'd benefit from a port and or valve job, I'd do it.

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to your help and guidance almost as much as I'm looking forward to this small build.

well i am kinda in the same boat. 6.1 motor but i am doing pistons and rods ect.

you want a beehive spring package.. has titanum keepers with springs and spacers

new pushrods for sure. as for cam.. i am no help.. seams 25 people will have 125 answers.. try talking to modern muscle or hhp about a cam maybe.

timing chain.. depends. if it is low milage. i would just reuse it.. you may end up needing a new timeing cover gasket as i am not sure they are reusable or not.. they are cheap enough though. stock plugs would be fine i would guess as you arn't doing anything like changing compression or a supercharger.

get OEM header gaskets. i would look at different bolts either arp or the stage 8 bolts.

the underdrive pulley you are going to pin it? they have a keyway so unless you had someone take the crank out and cut a keyway you will have to or the shop pin it to the crank. unless something has changed.

i am guessing this is a vvt motor? i am not super familiar with what plays into that when cam and what not is selected i think some people do the MDS delete. but again i am not familiar with it.

hhp is a little cheaper on some parts than others.. call and talk to bruce he can get you some info.

You will have to touch the heads.
New Springs plus forged push rods. If it is vvt I would suggest non vvt lifters from a 6.1 engine. I also replaced the timing chain and all the bits that go with it (improved mopar parts from factory recall). I have a Lunati blower cam swap thread in the OST Dyno section.

I would have Modern Muscle, a vender on this site, spec the cam to your needs, you would need Valve springs, push rods, non mds lifters if auto trans, gaskets. I would skip the under drive pulley I haven't read any good things about them.

Dude....

You need the springs. Factory pushrods good for up to 7K rpms. Forged push rods are $120. Cheap insurance. I have seen too many threads with guys breaking valve springs after a cam swap. Get the tool that allows you to swap out the springs with the heads on the car.

Waiting for Big E at BFNY to chime in..... he will tell ya! :)

Big E is in Ohio.... I think. Check him out in his vendor thread.

Hemituner (AJ) is a vendor here as well and he can do the job! He excels at tuning! Your smiles will be many!
