Timing

Just curious what a general number is that anyone that has a supercharged car has for a min and max for timing on our cars

Curious mainly on the max timing. If anyone could help that would be great

My tune is maxed out at 13 (yes thirteen) degrees on 8 pounds running 93 octane. Stock 5.7 Eagle, still occasionally gets a few deg of STKNK retard.

Thanks

So if the tuner has the high side at 31 on 11lbs then that would be s bit much lol

When & where are you seeing 31?

It depends on the build, ECT, IAT, RPM, etc. More boost and or higher compression and the timing has to be less to avoid knock. As IAT and ECT increase nannies step in as safeties and lower the timing as well. Timing will also start lower in lower RPM ranges and ramp up with RPM (usually).

My engine is forged and 9:1 compression and at 14psi my timing will start off around 8-10° at WOT and 2500 RPM and ramps to 16-17° by 4000PM or so and stays there. As IAT crosses about 150, a degree or two of timing is pulled. This is tuned on Shell 93 octane.

There is no set number for all engines. Each one is somewhat unique, but there are guidelines. To get my timing set properly, Mike got all the rest of the tune dialed in, AFR, nannies, TC, etc. The last thing we did was the timing. He gradually increased and adjusted knock sensor sensitivity until we thought we had it set right. He then had me run race fuel and data log to confirm real knock or false, and final adjustments were made to dial it in perfect. A bit involved, but I like knowing it's custom tuned for my engine and I'm getting the best performance and the knock sensors will do their job to protect things when necessary.

On a stock engine, it seems most tuners stick around 12-14 degrees of timing max on 6-8psi as a rule of thumb from what I've seen. I'm not sure when they start to pull timing from IAT and ECT though.

If you saw 31° of timing even NA on pump gas I think something is off and I would not continue pushing the engine until it's solved.

I run 9° max on pump. My race tune has 16°. There is plenty more power available, but the more power, the higher the IATs. It's a give and take. You want to find the area that you can make good power and still have a setup that lasts awhile. ????
