Event Idea?

All,

Good morning. I have a question for the forum as a whole. I wonder if enough of us would be interested in an event similar to Challenger Fest but, involving a road course instead of a quarter mile track? I recently attended the SRT track experience and "found my calling" on the road course.(and after watching lukster's "ring" video a half dozen times, well....) It was great fun but, would have enjoyed a longer track. I sent these folks an email and they would be glad to discuss with the group if there is enough interest. The other positive is that it's centrally located so that folks from all over the country could make it. Just wondered what everyone thought. Any interest?

Here is the link to the track...they run SCCA events too. Check out the links in the upper left part of the screen. Has track map and photos. 1.8 mile track with 80 ft of elevation change, grandstands for specators, area for vendors, might be cool?

Not trying to be Debbie Downer, but a couple issues I see are:

1. Road course is very hard on your car. The SRT Experience give a very minor taste of it with their version of follow the leader, but when you get cut loose by your self and turn off the safeties, inexperienced folks get in trouble very easily. There are several here that have done HPDE events in their cars and they can attest that it is very different than the SRT event. There's infinitely more to be aware of, and many would be really shocked how many cars get pulled during the day with issues. It would be especially hard on guys with R/T's as I think the standard brakes would get them into problems really quickly on a big track.

2. Oklahoma is very central geographically, but it is in fact a long way from where the majority of the people are, and the net result is that instead of being a long way for some, but a decent day's drive for many, it's a very long way for the vast majority. We might pick up a very few members from Texas, and the plains, but would likely lose more from the east coast and Canada. We pretty much went through location a great deal after CF1 and "settled" on B.G. for the next two as it seemed to be pretty central to the most members. I hate to say "settled" as B.G. has been very good for us so far.

Just a couple of thoughts, though if it could be put together we would likely be there. Hell I might bring Mini-Me and whoop some big, heavy butt!!!!

I love the idea. BT is right, the road stuff is hard on the cars. My 392 was cooking at willow springs oil temps of 280+

It's fun as hell though. Can I bring my boss? (Ducks and runs)

I understand that the road course is hard on cars. (It's tough on tires too) Just looked like fun and wondered if the group would be interested. Not trying to take anything away from BG, from the comments I've seen and heard, everyone had a blast there. Didn't think about possible brake issues with the R/T group though.. (sorry guys/girls) May have to "go it alone" if not enough interest but, think it would worth it. Thank you Chuck, this is why I posted the idea. I wanted some good feedback from those with experience.

John, Don't get me wrong, I am interested, just don't know if we can get enough guys for a rental type event. I do think that most guys look at it are quick to consider the fun factor and that they want to try it, but don't understand just how hard it is on brakes, tires, and temps!

^^^^ Love it Chuck....If you can show me a vid of you passing him, I'll PM our resident "retired art teacher" and pay him to make you one... :)

Cool. I'd really like to do it but, being the OCD type, would bring oil and filter to change it prior to drive home, extra tires that are expendable, etc.... lol

I put together a pretty big late model mopar road course event a few years ago at New jersey Motorsports Park. Was an f'n blast, real racing IMO. Its not easy though, lots of expenses, insurance, instructors etc.. We did get a few sponsors to kick in a few thousand to help with costs. Catered and everyone got an instructor every other session.

We've done 3 on LXF, 100 cars at each I think.

I would love to do it. The time I took my 09 SRT out I fucked up 4 tires, all my brakes and rotors. Pretty expensive couple of days I might say.

If I do it again, I will get dedicated road course tires/wheels and probably a coil over kit. Those are probably the next on my list as I am happy at 11.34 with my 1/4 mile time.

Two thumbs up from me, these cars were made for twisties and think you should go with your gut and set this up like ChallengerFest and Lone Star Mopar Fest. You could run rookies thru one at a time say, no problem with cars holding up to GRIND of real racing, but gives many a taste of what these cars can do. OK is central enough but the real trick to anything is getting word out as far and early as possible, so see what it takes and if you DO something Texas Outlaw Challengers will pimp it, ANY excuse to get together with other Challengers makes us SMILE, DO IT! :D

^^^^ Thanks much Sickrb... :) Like the idea too. Here is another alternative if not enough interest from the forum as a whole: (same venue with approx cost...)

They have a program called High Speed Touring and usually have it in combination with Competition Motorsports 16 days each season. Yesterday, they had an HST standalone. (You can check out the HST program on the hallettracing.com website) This might be what we want to do if we cannot get enough drivers to have a private day. A Tues, Wednesday, or Thursday is $1200 for 1 -5 cars and $100 for every car over 5. In the HST program they take up to 20 drivers in each group for $95 + an annual license fee of $50 and and initial Driver Education fee of $50.

Just thinking about options and cost....Thoughts on this anyone?
