New Pb For The Ost Jeep - Qcr Event Was A Blast!

Track prep was fantastic the entire day! It was a nice turnout and Norm and AJ Fox (track owners) did a great job of keeping the cars moving. I spent some time in the tower and to be honest, my head was spinning. Between the cars running, the walkie talkies constantly requesting information, the "walkin's" asking questions I have no idea how they do this for 3 straight days!

In any event the Jeep was still struggling with TCM issues but without changing a thing (maybe the TCM is learning?) the Jeep went from a first pass of 10.07 to a 9.90. Our MPH was off quite a bit but QCR has always been at least a tenth to a tenth and a half slower in my GTX due to the uphill section at the end of the track. However, we hit the intended goal with the Jeep and now it will see some serious street duty.

What is holding you back TCM wise? What TCM are you currently using and from what Year Truck?

Thanks

AJ

AJ,

Thanks for your interest.

It's an 06 Jeep, Paramount TCM's (one 6200rpm and one 6500rpm). With no tuning changes/reloads/modifications the shift points are all over the place. Also, unless I leave the rev limit in the tune set to a point that it closes the TB a wee bit the converter RPM recovery (what some call "locking") stinks.

When I have the rev limit set at 7200 and when the shifts occur at 7000rpm (6500rpm TCM ) the TB closes, the Jeep falls on it's face, the shift is clean and the RPM recovery is good. This has to be hurting my ET's - but I am happy with the 9.90 with no weight reduction.

If I move the rev limit to 7600 in the tune the TB doesn't close and there is minimal shift RPM recovery and the Jeep's ET slows

The biggest issue is the random shift points. I am not sure if that can be controlled or not?

I also think I'll be shipping the converter back to ProTorque to get it tightened up. When I spoke to Jimmy at National Trails he mentioned that was something that helped a bunch with RPM recovery.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Your issue is that the converter slip ratio is beyond the point where the TCM will attempt to apply the lockup clutch. The result is no rpm drop on shifts due to converter inefficiencies. Based on your conversation with Jimmy today he relayed to me what your flash stall is. If that is correct you have NO chance of having that lockup clutch apply. We have been chasing this for a while Joe has really been the only one who wants to listen and make the custom parts necessary. Ill chat with him let me know when your converter is to arrive. Your shift points will fall in line for the most part once the converter is not slipping. Ill bet right now on the fluid coupling alone your converter slip ratio is somewhere in the 60% range.

Hope this helps

AJ

Thanks AJ and tell Jimmy thanks for taking the time to chat. I don't know if he mentioned this but the rpm recovery/converter lock does work if the TB closes - but that is no way to go down the track :)

Also, your explanation would also explain why turning up the boost from 18psi to 22 psi netted no gains. The slip is probably just increasing and the fluid is only getting hotter.

I have a stack of cars in the shop that come before the Jeep so it may be a bit before we yank the converter and ship it to Joe. I thought he was still on his honeymoon?

Thanks again for your insight, it is appreciated!

Good stuff Mike, all around. Hope the converter stuff gets sorted. 9 second street Jeep is nuts.

Yes, Micah and I are both happy with the results. Quaker is an uphill track so we know it can go a little faster - but that's not necessary.

If AJ can get Joe the proper data and get the converter working like Jimmy's I should get faster ET's AND better gas mileage :)

Can you say "have your cake and it it too"?
