My First 4 Years With Performance Werks Racing (pwr)

236 posts in this topic

Somebody on here asked if anyone had ever been ripped off by PWR, so I figured this would help to answer their question.

I bought my first PWR engine 4 years ago and have spent a little over US$12K with Andy in total. The first engine burned oil, so Andy replaced it with another motor. It's great that Andy stepped up and replaced it under warranty, but he replaced it with another oil burner.

The first warranty replacement cost me a lot of money for install, gaskets, fluids, etc., etc. so Andy's been promising to make it right on the second warranty replacement ever since.

Some notes from the emails I've received from Andy over the last year and a half.... (When something takes this long, you have lots of time to get pissed off and make notes)
Summer 2013... We had a problem with Huntsville Engine's honing on your engine; Will replace your motor again; I'll do a 440 and bump the camshaft; You won't be spending any money; I'll cover the install
August 2013... Give me a week to get good dates; How does an October install sound?
October 2013... Waiting for Billy to build; Have parts; You're first in line with PWR
December 2013... Building your 440 right now; Will ship in 2-3 weeks
February 2014...Block is honed; Working on it; Had to send crank to Callies for polishing
March 2014... Crank is back; Will start on it on Thursday; Will wrap up soon
May 2014... Waiting on springs for Thiteks
June 2014... Will get you an update today (never received one)
July 2014... Billy is finishing up two 393's and then moving onto yours; 7-10 days
August 2014... No PWR engines are ahead of you; You are my main priority
September 2014... Will be completed and shipped in 30 days

October 2014... 90% of your parts are at Billy's

November 2014... Completely caught up by year's end
December 2014... Rods delivered to Billy's on December 4th
January 2015... Almost there

February 20, 2015...

So, has anyone ever been ripped off by PWR?? You decide.

Last fall, I offered to pay for the shipping and the installation cost that Andy had said he would cover. This month, I even offered to pay for the remaining cost of Billy Briggs' labor to finish the build. I still have nothing.

I've gone way above and beyond what I would have done for any company. I've tried way too hard to not damage a guy's business or reputation, but this is fucked up.

EDIT: For future search reference: Andy Underwood, Paul Underwood, Paul Andrew Underwood, Raymond H. Alstadt, Joyce K. Alstadt, Performance Werks Racing, Performance Works Racing, Performance Worx Racing LLC, PWR

yep... sounds typical.

kent youre better off cutting your losses and moving on.

even if dickweed does deliver a motor , who knows if itll be a good motor..... not just a bunch of used junkyard parts put together to shut up a customer.

Kent

That sucks and your list is exactly why I pulled the plug. I can live with being behind and "shit happens" to an extent, but when it turns to flat out lies!!! that's enough. I went through the same thing...Billy has all your parts, then Billy just needs your rods, then I just sent Billy your pistons, then somehow I needed everything again and then I am sorry, I had to use your crank for someone else but I will have another one next week.

I can't deal with lies.

Like Mani said, you probably just need to cut your losses and that blows.

Are you sure 90% of the parts are there? Are you sure they are the parts you paid for or just some no name substitutes ?

As difficult as it might be -go get your stuff NOW and move on. I wish I had done so a year before I finally did.

Kent, at some point enough is enough, cut the loss and move forward with better vendors, there is NOTHING that you can't get from someone else....people need to cut PWR off and even stop advertizing him in their signature, it gives a false impression.....

I get a shitty 2 star review on Yelp for my business and I'm up all night. I don't how this dude does it.

How does he get up in the morning and look in the mirror.

Haha!!

i don't understand why everyone says JUST CUT YOUR LOSSES AND MOVE ON.. bullshit.

i would go to his damb house if i half to.. knock on the door and say you have 2 choices.. give me money to fix the pc of shit lego motors you had built or you will be going to the e.r. choice is yours.

i don't get the oh poor andy.. oh this.. oh that.. ahh nope.. i am a broke white man. and when i buy something i expect it to be correct, and what i asked for. i guess your guy's pocket books are alot deeper than mine..... there is no way in hell i would settle for MOVE ONE.. i would have his balls stapled to the dash of my car before i was done with him if i was in the situation you are.

but hey.. what do i know. i am just a moron from iowa

Now why in the hell would you go putting two ittys bittys tiny weenie holes in your dash, that just seems completely counter productive. On the other hand, if you hung them in front of the radiator fan, itd sound like cards in bicycle spokes.......well at least for a while.

Just a suggestion. :o

Damn OP, that sucks. As I understand it, it was those first dozen crap motors he built and basically gave away that caused this grief. A hit like that without deep pockets creates a hurdle you just can't get over.

What about the last few motors he sold that were slapped together because he couldnt afford to assemble them with the actual parts ?

I only know that from recent readings. The other is why no one ever saw a pwr motor in anything I built. I've said it before, I like Andy, but he ain't no mechanic let alone engine builder. Striking up a deal with Billy was the best thing he ever did. He just did it far too late into the hole he dug. Fixing a problem is three time the original expense, I feel bad for everyone that took a hit on this.

Maybe I should add the only reason I've said anything is don't think the carelessness hasn't cost me either. I've paid dearly repairing stuff for free that the customer supplied and I was told I'd be taken care of. Thank gawd I don't put anything together without a fairly thorough check out before hand. Cause I'll be damned if losing a motor will be laid on me.

I think the point is not to JUST walk away but to save yourself more grief and go get your shit if he has it cause you're probably not going to be made whole otherwise. But do take legal action to at least make him answer for his actions.

Sending him to the ER is felony assault and in the unfortunate instance that he were to die in the beating you're looking at manslaughter or murder. I think most of us prefer to live outside of a jail cell.

Physical assault will cause you much more grief than just moving on. Jail time is not worth the satisfaction of giving him a well deserved beating IMO.

A lawyer will tell you unless he has assets you gain nothing by a lawsuit. Might just lose more money.

Criminal prosecution will not get you a motor or financial compensation either. What are the chances he would just get probation or community service? How much of your time would be required to assist the prosecutor?

The satisfaction one might feel dragging him to court will not compensate for all the lost time or expenses from having trusted Andy to build you a motor IMO.

Everyone keeps hoping Andy will do the right thing. Certainly didn't happen for a lot of his customers. Sometimes cutting your losses and moving forward IS the better solution IMO.

As much as I have the same thought about just walking away from the grief, I think Andy has two ways to finish this...

Do what you gave your word on, or admit that your word is worthless.

Whaddya say, Andy??
