Shorty Headers... Worth It Or Not?

So the thought came to my mind last night that perhaps I would install some shorty headers no my '14 Ram 5.7, BBK or similar. Does anyone run these? What are your opinions on running them. I'll be N/A for a little while, but Procharger D1SC with 7-9 lbs is in the works. This is a daily driver and I do not want to deal with long tubes. I don't want a loud truck, so much so that I'm almost opposed to doing a cat back. I like the nice quiet ride. Opinions? GO!

The 5.7 log manifolds are about as bad as you can get. Anything is a great improvement IMO.

Truth^^^

I personally would say go Longtubes. BUT if I had to go with shorty headers, I would look into Hookers or JBAs. IMO BBK isn't all that great.

Thanks for the input guys. I know there's more to be had with long tubes, but there's also a lot more to spend to get them. I figure with the Procharger, a set of shortys will be just fine. I'm not building a dragster. I'm just making my 4 door truck a bit more fun to drive and giving it a lil more ass to use for towing.

I have never owned a towing vehicle with a SC but I am not sure how that is going to work out. You may want to get some opinions from Cam & Eric & some of these guys on the forum about it. My challenger is SC with a Vortech. Pretty much same setup as the ProCharger. Both are centri type SC. I know on my car it is pretty calm until I hit around 2000 rpms & then you better be holding on. I could only imagine my Ram being SC towing my car when it started making boost. DANGEROUS. My Vortech is making 13lbs of boost but even at 6-7 lbs it came on pretty fast. Not trying to hijack your tread but do a little more checking before you spend a lot of money SCing your truck & cannot use it to tow any more. I have a 2012 Ram 1500 I tow with. It has the 6 speed trans & 392 gear. I do run the Diablo 93 oct tune in it & changed a few parameters. I have raced a few 4.6 mustangs & rice rockets in it. Not lost a race yet. Just giving you something to think about.

Your input is appreciated, but I'm not worried about a boost surge with the centri. I'm very familiar with all forms of forced induction and chose to go centri for price and controllability. If I had the coin I'd much sooner go turbo, but with the way in going to set up my waste gate I'm not worried about it at all. I'm not going to be using a traditional waste gate either. I'm actually going to be using one designed for airplanes. It will allow more precise control of the boost, and only feed it when I want it.

8spd or 6spd trans? I ask because I would have serious pause about boosting the 6 spd auto.

6 speed. I've heard a lot about the potential issues with the 6 speed and, trust me, that is on my mind. I would love to find a shop that builds a beefier version of the 65RFE, or if someone could tell me what's involved, swap to a 66RFE or 68RFE.

Give hemi31 a call brother. He'll give you the skinny and whatever the best solution is he can provide it.

Btw shorties will really help. I'm going to do my 15 ram in the near future.

BBK are the biggest POS headers I've ever run. Mine are leaking like mofo.

I've heard a lot of people in the Mopar world say BBK was bad, I had two different sets on my Mustrat in the day...one shorty...and eventually LT. Both worked fine other than discoloration (which I would think happens to even the most expensive?) But I've heard so much negative about BBK recently I'm really going to go with JBA or Kooks instead. If one says its bad, it's a toss up...but you get more than 3 it's time to really accept it as fact!
