My Review Of The B&G 392 Tune!

104 posts in this topic

I have struggled with this for the last few weeks. I wanted to give B&G an opportunity to address some of the issues before posting anything. At this point I have dedicated more of my time to this then I care to. Before I write this I want you to know I tried to work with B&G, I sent them dyno sheets, afr logs, and emailed and called several times over the last 2 weeks.

Here is my objective review of the B&G tune.

We will start with the good -

1. The removal of torque management (at least in the auto) is very noticeable. The car shifts better, it drives better, and the hesitation at the shifts is all but gone. The TM was sucking out a ton of timing around shifts. Then again, most of you already knew this.

2. No more check engine lights from high flow cats. Not a huge deal, but I know I hate seeing the CEL on the dash.

3. The fan settings are lowered and the fans do a great job keeping the car cool. Especially with a 180 thermostat

4. The swap is easy, buy a second ecm (I would highly recommend for warranty issues and knowing they try to flash every car that comes in under warranty as its easy money), but unplug the old, plug in the new, done

5. Idle and fuel trims - they are much better with headers and B&G tune. The idle is smoothed out, the trims are where they should be, the AFR is spot on

The bad -

1. There is too much part throttle timing. At 3/4 throttle its like having a bag of popcorn in the microwave. Maybe it was bad gas, I don't know, but it happened to me multiple times with gas from multiple top tier gas stations. This is a PROBLEM!

2. 15 different dyno runs, 3 different cars, across 3 different days with temperatures into the 50's and I never saw more than 9/13 gain on the dyno.

3. Air Fuel ratio at wide open throttle does not resemble that of a tuned car. It mirrors the factory tune. It starts at 11.5 in most cases and on my car in particular was all the way down to 10.8 at the end of the runs. Anyone who tunes hemi's will tell you they enjoy a little extra fuel, but anything in the 11's on a NA car is just way too much fuel. 10's is obscene. I doubt it will have much impact on the cars output, but if there is another 10 to be had from putting the AFR on a nice smooth line.........hey that's 10 more.

4. You can expect negligible gains anytime the temps are over 85 degrees. The first time we tested the cars they showed next to nothing in gains with 100 degree IAT's.

5. B&G is difficult to get in contact with. You have to keep calling. They don't respond to emails, the phones go to voice mail, I have never got a return email or phone call

6. It is very expensive, not the tune itself, but by the time you buy and ecm, get it flashed to stock, buy the tune and have it shipped.....

The Verdict

I will start by saying I had very high hopes for this tune. It does give you some creature comforts of having a tuned car. I like the way the car drives, it is smoother, it idles better, and shifts better. unfortunately I am going to have to say the bad out weighs the good here though. I think there could be a lot more there as far as gains. The timing and the air fuel issues need to be worked out. The IAT tables that modify spark based on temperatures need to be worked on.

I think it is awesome that B&G can tune the cars. I would love to work with them to get the tune right. I don't know if they will want to do that after my honest account of their tune, but my loyalties are with the community and its members. My advice, wait until the tune is right. If they are willing and able to fix the issues outlined above I think it will be a great tune.

Good deal man. I was thinking you guys were only getting around 10 rwhp gains with it from past B&G stuff. I just wish I could get my hands on the Chrysler software he has. There is actualy a guy that has it and has given it to a few people out there. I really dont know how much longer I can last with my 392 stock. ive been going back and forth with trading in for a new GT500 or 2008-2010 Viper but its hard to do when I like the 392 so much.

Are you gonna post this on the CT? If so, its gonna be good. lol

THANK YOU!!!

One question, not that I'm looking for at the B&G tune as an option, at least not in this form. But you mentioned the TM "at least in the auto." Any insight on what kind of TM lies in the 6 speed's way?

I only had my own car to drive around and log. I couldn't tell you.

I am going to wait a bit and see if it gets linked to MMF first. Maybe draw some more folks to the darkside :)

B&G tuned?

If yer engine dyno is up on cinder blocks......you might be a redneck

Dude, don't get a Mustang, take your car to Arrington for the TVMC and be done. UFO's car ran 11.62 this weekend.

no problem, was hoping one of the 3 different cars was a stick. I wonder what RR and Baron will think when they get a look at this...eh, 9-13 almost equal 40 right?

U.F.O's car has a 11.2 at least. Needs to leave the line harder! Needs a converter

Absolutely, its actually a 10 second car in my opinion. It needs a converter, drag wheel setup, and a complete rear diff swap. It should leave in the 1.5's not 1.8's. My best 60 is 1.58 in my 392 NA

Yup... I gotta Arrington MTCM. Was looking forward to using it at CF3. Unfortunately it was just along for the ride last weekend. It doesn't like my 8lb tune. My tune needs to be adjusted.

Hemituner.. it's been almost two weeks.... where you at man?

I was actually throwing around another idea too. Selling the 392 and getting a used (the most base as possible) 2009 R/T and then build the hell out of it for less money than a new gt500.

Yes do that if you have to, much better than buying a GT500 and you will still have the better looking car. :D

^^^ That right there is why I will not touch this.

This is exactly what we saw 6 years ago on the LX's logged through a StarMobile.
that was a year or so before I started on LX 's. I drove around for 1000 miles watching this tune. I think I was exceptionally fair in my evaluation.

I will most likely buy a 2010 Ecm and harness and get busy on my car. I'm probably done being patient.

Thanks for the post. Very informative and a good read. Sounds like there is a ton left on the table with the tunes being put out. Its a shame they are so hard to work with

That's an objective write-up if I've ever seen one. Nicely done, B.

I feel for the 2011+ 392 folks. They deserve better for what they paid. If you can't wait, do it safely, though. Get the 2010 PCM swap and a proper tune. You've got a beautiful motor and there's not point putting it through hell for close to no add'l power.

Eric from Arrington took me for a spin in his 392 stock motor with the Maggie and that thing pulled hard. Spilled my damn rum before the awards ceremony B)

vroom cough vroom.....

A very honest review, most of us here were just trying to save the few that just go on someone's seat of the pants feeling and guessing on Hp gains, people are desperate for a tunable 2011 up Hemi and are will to jump even if the product was not reviewed or checked out, it was only after pressure from guy's over here that the testing took place.
