Factory 392 Build (How Far Can We Take It?)

124 posts in this topic

Hey Andy. We didn't talk about a camshaft...should we? On the sister thing...hell yeah! We might know each other. I live in Germantown, close to Collierville, right behind Houston Middle School. I'm a native Memphian and know this town like the back of my hand. Small world.....

I am doing a SHR Viking tranny with a protorque 3000 to 3200 stall converter. There is probably a less expensive option, but that bitch can handle anything from what I have heard.

The trans is money but I'd get it. It's pretty damn impressive....I've driven an Arrington forged 392 that was blown with that trans and it'll give you a woody straight up...get it?

Seriously, I'd have no problem running the 12psi with that CR with a good tune, good fuel and the right plugs. I don't think you'll have a prob. Apparently the new 392 cams are pretty sweet but Andy's asking a good question. Have the conversation.

Package deal from Arrington.

AJ is picking the stall based on the combo.

Sam and Andy. I asked the Q's and the answers sound reasonable. On the cam question. The stock 392 VVT cam is bad-ass. Very sufficient for what we have on the table. On the transmission, I already did a stage 3 upgrade when we did the PCM swap, so I'm 3/4 there towards a tranny build like the Viking. Blue topped takes me easily to where I need to be at 15% of the cost. I'm adding the torque converter to the build. 2,200-2,800 stall range. Maybe a Paramount, either way a quality unit. I think this car is gonna rock.

The way I figure it, I could have gone and bought a BMW M5 and spent 100k+ OR could trick out a 392 and ended up with a whole lot better and faster (and more fun) vehicle, cheaper. It's a no-brainer the way I see it.

Jim, you just can't beat the Challenger. It is a beautiful car that is timeless in its appearance. People can talk all fucking day about the GT500 and how it is a better value with more HP than the Challenger, but you can't change the sheet metal on the stang. Be happy and have fun, the Challenger is the way to go.

10/4 Alan. Totally agree. I'm gonna do everything this side of breaking the law to take the 2011 factory 392 to the absolute limits of it's capabilities. Within reason, of course. The problem? What's the definition of reason? B)

Fuck ya Jim your car is going to be bad ass. I might need to run and hide from ya at CF4. :) Just kidding never turn down a good race. lol

I'll try and spend some more of your cash.

90 mm Maggie snout with a 90mm TB to match?? Get a Nos port, knowing you you'll be wanting more in two months :P

Headers,High flows or Catless Mids if you can stand the emissions deal in your area.

I have been a fan of the independent drive and there was some work being done on that but have not heard about it in months. Probably over kill but I like the idea of not spinning with the accessories.

Get a Fire extinguisher mounted your going to want it.

Trans blanket is $400 bucks, might want it. I would do it for what it could save you.

Bad to the bone Jim. Live while you can.

Love your attitude Rob! Some of the things you mention I already have. I put Kooks long tube headers and high flow cats, Flowmaster mids (resonator delete) on the car prior to doing the PCM swap.

Have you thought about a MTCM for the trans? An extra large trans cooler will let that trans live longer especially since yours is a southern car (humid climate)!

Best wishes Jim. You are living the dream man!

I think we can get 650 WHP or so with the limited cam choices. Should be interesting for sure....def enough to make a mod 10 sec car with 100% pure street manners.

You guys just got 635 rwhp on the forged 392 build you did 2 weeks ago without porting the heads. If we port my heads do we have a shot at a number higher than 650?

93 octane always. I don't think the car has ever been filled with anything lower. When I go to the track I usually add 5 gallons of 104 unleaded.

Heads are that big of a deal on PA cars. Not going to give you 50hp. The apache heads aren't bad from the factory. Forget the 104 stuff. MS109 or the new Shell is the way to go

Hey GSO. 104 is the highest octane unleaded they carry at Memphis International Raceway. They have leaded race gas rated higher, but since I'm running cats they told me I shouldn't run leaded. Is that bad advice?
