Factory 392 Build (How Far Can We Take It?)

124 posts in this topic

I'm excited to see this. Your build is what has had me on the phone with Pierre at Arrington since January. I have a 2011 R/T so I plan to go 426 with the maggie and do it all in one shot. Considering the trans, rear end, PCM on top of the engine and SC, it's going to be more than I paid for the car so I'm in gut check mode but I hope to schedule my build next month.

That's badass! Be sure to make a build thread when you do it. We're going to want to see this!

I've got a friend upgrading from the 392 to the 426 and he runs a Maggie. He's a stick car though but I expect it'll be even more bad azz than what he's got now. Sometimes, enough just is never enough...

Rock on 2011BlackRT! Several people have told me that my pioneering, if you will, is what helped guide them to go forward with their own upgrades on 2011/2012's. Being Arrington's 1st factory 392 PCM swap was a little unnerving, but they had the solid rep. I was confident they'd make it right. I always wanted a 426 and if I blow up this engine that'll be my direction. In the meantime, I think this 392 has the potential to be a lot of fun. Forge this bitch...blow on it a little harder... :D ...gonna be a trip!

If you go with a 426 and stick with the Maggie, make sure the compresison ratio is a bit higher. While the Magnuson is a great blower, it is only 2.3L, so you'll max it out pretty quick on a big motor if you don't bump the compression on up there. I'd do 10.5:1 or so and 10psi of boost but of course ask Arrington for their reccomendation.

Who's running 10.5 CR on a boosted motor, J?

All the 392 supercharged cars are that Arrington's doing are nearly 11:1 compression...well stock block ones anyway. They're hitting 7psi on those. I'd think a forged built blue printed motor could handle 10psi at 10.5:1 yes?

I'm aware of 10:1 that's been running a good while but asking if you know of 10.5:1 CR's that have some miles, J. I was curious.

I don't see it as a huge leap, mind you, but that's easy for me to say since it won't be me rolling the dice.

Only one I can think of (426) is running 10:3 static compression ratio with 12lb boost making 733hp & 744 trq, built by Arringtons with a Maggie.

Arrington did a short block on a factory 392 two weeks ago, their 1st forging of a 2011/2012, when they did the PCM swap. Cranked the Maggie up to 11.5lbs boost and got a 10.3:1 static compression ratio along with 635 rwhp and 675 ft lbs torque. They didn't port the heads on that car.

lol! Naw...I'm gonna dance with the one that brung me. This little 392 is gonna be pushing 700 rwhp when Arrington's through with it. I don't know that I really want much more power than that in a daily driver.

P.S. I just did the final review of the build specs and added a couple things we forgot, one being either an 85mm or 90mm throttle body. I made the 50% down payment, so "the game is afoot". Today feels like Christmas!!!

I like the idea of the higher CR. That's why I'm running one. We'll learn more over then next year or two. Also depends on how they're driven. Some of the fellas don't put but a few thousand miles on a car over a year and that's to meets and back. Different than flogging the hell out of it repeatedly.

Surprised that built 392 didn't put out a smidge more with that CR.

Thanks for the info Speedy, your blog also helped me with my catch can install and i highly considered stroking my RT based on your build as well. I have been a lurking the forums for over a year reading and researching while waiting for tuning. I followed you guys here after CT fell apart. I am tired of waiting to most likely be told the official tuning support will not be as good as a diablo. Maybe soon I can change my username to 426RT.

Thanks guys, all of your groundwork is saving me a lot of guessing! ;)

Mine is a daily driver too, 12 miles each way to the office. I want to balance longevity with the highest level of streetability I can get so I'll be letting AJ and the team make the best recommendations on which way we should go.

I've put 9k on it in the year I've owned it and I try not to drive it in the rain at all. Hell I don't even leave the house in it if it is slightly dirty or over 30% chance of rain, I drive my 92 bronco, it looks great dirty! Black is beautiful but it is a labor of love.

The last thing crossing my mind is I know I want to do a brake upgrade which will be over $6k, and while I was conservative with my color choice, I'd love a GWE now. My wife is even pushing me to trade in for a 2011 GWE 392 if I can find one new or slightly used and forge / SC that instead. I've done the math and in the end it works out to about the same price. I've already put the SRT suspension on and Zoomers but I might go with pedders anyway.

In the end with a 426 I'd push more to the wheels so I'm leaning that way and considering custom graphics / paint.

So many options and I over analyze my interests, I'm giving myself about a month to make my mind up! I know Pierre is sick of hearing from me by now... lol

ETA: Sorry for the thread highjack UFO, just wanted to let you guys know I appreciate your trailblazing and providing such detailed info about it.

On the CR subject, like Sam said, big diff between daily driver and a track car. For a DD 9.5 is probably the best but that could be debated some depending on who you talk to. Gas is the biggest factor you need the good stuff if you do go to 10.1 and have less room for error. Track car shoot why stay in the 10's lol lets try 11's. :D

I talked with the engine folks when I was doing my build last March and told them I would like to see 10.1. Rejected lol I'm happy with what I ended up with. Talk with the guys they are the experts they won't steer you wrong.

BlackRT, sounds like you have one hell of a built in front of you. It will be one helluva nice ride when it's done. Congrats.

Wow, you're ballsy. Speedy and I don't take our cars out if it's more than a 20% chance of rain.

lol
