Ok 392 Cam In 5.7 Or Not?

188 posts in this topic

We have a couple of guys here who are running and actively pushing the comps but I haven't seen or heard much about the results.

thats the thing if there were great results? The word would spred like crazy. HHP posted some big numbers a year ago and disappeared, why? The market would be huge for it.

I went back and found the HHP thread on LX. The guy disassembled the car 6 mos after install, but claimed he'd hit a 12.0 at 119MPH in the car on street tires and busted rear shocks.

http://www.lxforums.com/board/f113/dyno-results-vvt-5-7l-camshafts-100-rwhp-gain-303230/

But like you said, if they were such a huge success we'd be hearing about A LOT of them.

Never saw a time slip though either..I believe I was one to ask for the slip with no response

Sorry, no point in changing cams, mine is not for sale. Not gonna spend $1000 for 7 hp, that is an R/T guy move.:)

Mine was under $500 until I had to pull heads and replace a noisy lifter, replaced them all for another $800. So I well overpaid, plus all my time involved in doing the job.

really mine only cost 58.00?

As much as I love giving slow R/T owners shit, I was actually talking about cams for the 392, but they are technically the same amount of labor to install I would guess.

When I sent my car to Scott, we talked for about 5 seconds about it. Cam is around $900 for my car if I remember right and I think he said 20 to 30 HP. We never talked labor, probably not bad considering my engine is coming out, but still pointless to me because the tuning probably sucks too, fuck that.

So Phil, you installed the cam yourself or someone did it for free? I can see trying the cheap ass $58 392 cam in a 5.7, but with all the potential labor (even if you blow your mechanic :) ) tuning issues, I would not even think about it.

However, I don't know shit, Phil is the genius :)

Yea $60 for Cam, then $250 for Valve Springs, retainers, & Shims. Another $130 for Forged Pushrods if you want them. Then $800 or so if you have any Lifter issues like I did. Figured since I had to pull heads I would replace them all while in there. Cost me over $1300 and I did all the Labor, then you have the tuning to contend with after. Cheap Cam turned into a pain in the ass.

Like you my engine was being gone through so adding a 60.00 cam was no big deal. Would I take a engine apart just to add that cam? Hell no, I would not take any engine apart for just a part here and there. Like drop in pistons only :P I would do it all at once. As far as tuning goes it runs in my car now with no tune at all. I am sure a custom tune would net something though.

After I installed the cam it took a long time for the lifters to pump back up. The engine sounded terrible when I started it, same with mopar 280 it sounded the same way.

Mine would not stop ticking no matter the condition...

Odd that the cam caused problems with the lifters huh?

Well, I talked to Mike @ OST last night about all this. He said he's done one or two 392 cams via remote tuning but the customers haven't done any dyno so he doesn't have any data at all.

He's done a Comp 274 on a 5.7 car with a Kenny Bell and it picked up 100RWHP. He posted the dyno sheet on this forum he said, and I remember seeing it somewhere. He said you could see the power just pour on as he adjusted the cam timing in the tune. He's doing another one in a 392 here soon and will report back those results.

He did inform me the big issue with tuning is access to the necessary tables via CMR. He said Diablo has been working on it quite a bit, and are about 75% there, but that last 25% is what he really wants. The cars run good and the customers are all happy with them, but he said the low RPM and idle isn't as perfect as he likes them to be.

The lifter thing was because the lifters for the now-disabled MDS system were hollow and ticking too loud more than anything else.

I'm going to go google a Comp 274 cam to see if it can get me 100 hp.

Ah, I keep forgetting 345 has an auto and put in a 6 speed cam.

Yea I'm an idiot...I didn't check the Cam Part # before I installed it, and found out the hard way what I had.

Sounds like to me with the right cam timing and fuel adjustments these VVT Combos should give great results.

Thanks for the call Speedy, I really appreciate your input.
