Ok 392 Cam In 5.7 Or Not?

188 posts in this topic

Every time I think I can't hate these car companies any more, they go and find a way to top themselves.

Ford did the same thing when us '05-'09 V6 Mustang owners discovered that the larger GT front rotors would go directly on with nothing more then the brackets being swapped out. Suddenly the GT brackets sky rocketed in price and FRPP made a "V6 brake upgrade package" for several times the cost of the original brackets and rotors by themselves. This still pisses me off to this day.

Anyway, did ya think it was worth the $2k ya spent? What kinda lopey sound did ya get?

Yeah apparently this isn't the first time they have done this with the challenger, 6.4 fuel pump was a steal until Mopar found out R/T owners were dropping them in their fuel tank, now they are $250-$300, and I believe they skyrocketed the rear-ends too that a some owners were swapping out.

I honestly feel like the 2K was well worth the hp/tq gains I got. There are more aggressive cams out there making a little bit more power but at the time of my install, people were still having tuning issues with custom cams and the cost was an additional 1K so the 392 cam was a no brainer in my eyes. I'm very happy with it, the car is a daily driver and I have zero issues with it whether I'm sitting in grid-lock traffic at 100+ outside temp or crusing through town. The lope is very very minimal, I think you hear it more in the exhaust then at the engine (if any at all). People say they can hear it but I think they are just confused as I have high flow cats so the car sounds a little more aggressive then normal so they mistake that noise for a "engine lope". This is a mild cam compared to the custom grids you can get from all the big name guys, but with the 392 cam, if you get a proper tune, you'll certainly notice the gains and not suffer any losses.

these comments are all about the original post about 392 cam in a 5.7, and that's all i'm sayin.

forget about a 392 cam in a 5.7... even with the best tunner in the east coast. yeah you get numbers on the dyno but street wise(and track) it sucks. did that been there and back.

if someone is still interested in the dyno numbers I would be happy to share.

yeah, I see the dyno numbers and the seat of the pants responses on lx,, and all of a sudden they don't talk about street and drag performance. it is a great dyno queen result and that's all .

back to the posts above^^^^^6

Remember, no matter what cam you use, you need supporting mods to go with it to make it work best. If you are raising the operating range of the engine, you need to raise the stall speed of the convertor and shift speed of the trans to take advantage of it.

JB if that was response to me, you are correct, cam and nothing else doesn't do shit except sound pretty cool,

i'm way past that with an api cam, api ported heads, JBA headers, AJ flashed tcm, LMI true CAI., converter, and a little #6 Maggie.

Wasn't aimed at anyone in particular. Just putting information out there. Seen alot of people put a cam in and get disappointed by track results only to find our the still have stock converter and shift points. Cars need to be thought of as a system and how the mods affect that system is important.

You are correct people need to plan for the total package and know what they are trying to achieve. It's the same principles as in days past and I know of a few folks back in the day that would shove the biggest highest lift cam they thought they could get away with in their engine then wonder why their car ran like crap and didn't build power under 4K rpms.

Supercharge and be done.

Definitely supercharging but I but bought Grandpa Greg's 392 cam a while back and was considering adding it to the install. I may wait to see the car tuned to just the blower and then consider the cam later.
